Dr Hywel Cooper recently stepped down after nearly seven years as Clinical Lead for Dermatology at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust—one of the busiest dermatology services in the NHS. He continues to serve as the department’s Research Lead, driving innovation and evidence-based practice in dermatology care.

Dr Cooper graduated from Southampton Medical School in 1996 with distinction in Primary BM, having also completed a degree in Biomedical Science in 1995. His training includes an international diploma in Acupuncture from Changchun University Medical School in China, awarded in 1992. Following the completion of his MRCP in 2000, he began specialising in dermatology and went on to undertake two years of laboratory and clinical research focused on drug reactions—work that contributed to publications in leading medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine.

With extensive expertise across the full spectrum of skin disease, Dr Cooper’s clinical interests include skin cancer, chronic inflammatory skin conditions, connective tissue diseases, lesion diagnosis, and drug allergy. He also performs a wide range of dermatological procedures, including skin cancer and lesion excisions, diagnostic skin surgery, and injectable treatments for Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).
