About this condition

Both men and women can be affected by age related droopy eyelids often finding it becomes a concern when in their 40’s or 50’s. This concern characteristically displays stretched-looking skin of the upper eyelid that starts to hang low over the eye. As well as causing a tired look to the overall facial profile, droopy eyelids can progress and may even cover the eye to a point that they affect a person’s vision.

At Prema we consider both the aesthetic and functional challenges that droopy eyelids can present. Our experts are highly trained and experienced practitioners who will carry out any procedure with the utmost precision and care.

What Causes Droopy Eyelids?

Ageing skin around the eyes is a primary cause for droopy eyelids. As we get older the delicate skin in this area becomes thin due to the natural decline of collagen and elastin. As well as this, having rubbed and pulled the skin in this area (such as when applying eye drops, feeling tired, through irritation or placing contact lenses) can lead to a gradual stretching of the skin. In other circumstances, injury to the eye or skin can be a contributing factor.

What is the treatment for Droopy Eyelids?

Improving the look of droopy eyelids is usually considered to be a cosmetic issue. A treatment will help to open up the eye area, and restore a youthful look. At Prema, our expert practitioners can perform a treatment called OptiLift – this tightens the skin and helps stimulate the supporting muscles to give improved structure to the lower lid. However, it’s important to understand that ageing will continue, and sagging skin can start to reform – although maybe not for some years.

During your consultation, it may recommended that you consult with one of our in-house specialist ophthalmologists if any underlying medical concerns are suspected.
